概要 | Two Japanese adjectives ureshii and tanoshii are frequently used in everyday conversation; nonetheless, none of the previous studies (e.g. Nishio 1993, Yamada 1993, Fujita 1993, Kikuchi 1993 among others) so far have yet fully succeeded in delineating their semantic differences. In this study, I examined the two synonyms by exploring their seven possible antonyms (kanashii 'sad', kurushii 'painful', kuyashii 'regrettable', setsunai 'heartbreaking', sabishii 'lonely', tsurai 'painful' and iya 'unpleasant'), using the Leeds Collection of Internet Corpora. I counted the number of co-occurrences of ureshii/tanoshii and their seven possible antonyms. Based on the overall observation made, we can claim ureshii and tanoshii should be considered synonyms. At the same time, we have found a difference in the proportion of the co-occurrence with the most frequent antonym: ureshii is contrasted with its most frequent antonym 1.4 times more often than tanoshii is. |
