概要 | Early eighth century mythological texts were written as the central bureaucratic state in Yamato expanded its power over local regions. As mythology confirmed and established political institutions, such as through defining kinship groups and telling the meaning of local place-names, there existed a tension between the newly-created
written mythological texts approved by the central government and existing oral mythological traditions transmitted locally. This paper considers the relationship between the centrally imagined universal space and the locally perceived particular places as defined in the local Fudoki gazetteers, focusing on heavenly maiden tales. It also argues that the existence of intertexts of pre-existing local oral narratives must not be ignored when reading mythological narratives. |
